You Don’t Have to Get Lucky to Be Successful

Opportunities are literally everywhere, all around us, and it is our job as entrepreneurs to spot them out and go after them!  Often, when we think of other successful businesses, we can catch ourselves thinking, “They got lucky” or “They had better opportunities than we did.”

Of course there are outliers, but, most of the time, people that have become successful have not had any more opportunities than you have, they have just been able to manage those opportunities in a really productive way. 

We hope this encourages you instead discourages you - because what that means is that you have the same opportunity to grow your business as anyone else does. Sometimes we need to shift things around and do something different! So let’s dive into this encouraging, tough love, inspirational episode!

FINDING THE COURAGE TO MAKE THE ASK

When you think of the word “opportunity”, specifically in reference to growing and scaling your business, do you think that:

  1. Opportunities are things that come to you or

  2. Things you actually go out and create?

Here’s the truth - they can be BOTH! 

When you are in the beginning stages, generally, opportunities don’t just come your way. We often tell ourselves that opportunities just land in our laps, however, that’s not true. Successful entrepreneurs are not just lucky - they have laid groundwork and keep their eyes open to recognize opportunities and pursue them!

Sometimes, it takes vulnerability and courage to make the ask! Harness just a few seconds of bold courage to put yourself out there and remember - rejection is part of the reality of entrepreneurship and experiencing rejection will help you grow, period. Opportunities are there - you just need the courage and confidence to seize them!

*Pro Tip! Obstacles and challenges often present opportunities. When you are faced with tough times, ask yourself, “What is the opportunity here?”

FINDING OPPORTUNITIES IN COLLABORATION

One of the most underutilized strategies to seizing opportunities is, you guessed it - collaborations! Collaboration is a cornerstone of our business, and for a really good reason. There are SO many incredible benefits of collaborating with aligned businesses and business owners!

  1. Exposure & Cross Promotion

    You can get massive exposure from getting in front of other people’s audiences

  2. Build Trust with You Community 

    When audiences see you working other like minded business owners, it build trust fast.

  3. Shared Ideas + Shared Skills 

    A mastermind is a great example of this - a Mastermind is when two or more people come together to brainstorm and offer support and feedback. Incredible, creative ideas come out a mastermind that you could never be able to come up with on your own.

  4. Networking Opportunities 

    These are endless. When you start connecting + collaborating with others - you’ll expand your network exponentially 

  5. Referrals 

    Referrals are a natural, organic way to expand your network.The more people know and trust your business, the more likely they are to refer you.

  6. Saving money 

    Collaborations are an amazing way to save money! You share costs, and trade in value.

There is not a one size fits all strategy for every business, however, collaborations can work for every business no matter what industry you are in!

[00:02:53] When you think of the word opportunity, specifically when it has to do with growing and scaling your business, [00:03:00] what do you think about first? Do you think about the fact that opportunities are things that come to you, or do you think of it more as things that you actually go out and create? I'm curious to know what is the first thing that you think of?

[00:03:14] I think opportunities are actually both. I think there's opportunities that come directly to us. And I also think that there's opportunities that we go and pursue ourselves. Now when we're just starting our business and we don't really have a audience, we don't really have a community yet, we're just getting started and we're really in the trenches, those opportunities are not just gonna come our way, right?

[00:03:39] I think often what we tell ourselves is, Oh, opportunities are just things that land in people's laps, and they're so lucky to have those opportunities. However, a lot of those people that you admire, right? The people that you look at and you're like, Wow, they've been able to create these incredible successful, [00:04:00] thriving businesses, we're like, Wow, how did the tho they get those great opportunities? That speaking opportunity or that opportunity to collaborate with that amazing business or to get in that room at that mastermind, whatever it is, you think like, wow, they must be so lucky.

[00:04:16] And I think we do ourselves a disservice when we think other people are just lucky because the truth is opportunities are literally everywhere. They're all around us. But it's our job as entrepreneurs to spot those opportunities and go and pursue those opportunities. Because opportunities are not just gonna land in our lap. And if they do, they're probably a result of a lot of the hard work that we've already been doing. So I want you to really shift your mind and change your perspective of what it takes to be a successful.

[00:04:55] You don't have to be lucky. You don't have to necessarily be in the [00:05:00] right place at the right time. Yes, there are those moments, but it's all about taking advantage of the opportunities that both land in your lap, but the opportunities that are literally all around you. So let me give you a really specific example of this.

[00:05:15] So our mastermind members always get free tickets to our events. They're our VIPs for all the events that we host. We also host these, you know, special VIP events for them. So this was at our event, we had about 200 people there and all of our mastermind members were there as VIPs. And we had an incredible group of women who were on the panel that night.

[00:05:36] And so one of our mastermind members really wanted to connect with one of the speakers. She was definitely nervous to approach her and reach out to her, but after the event, she went up to her and she said hello, and she, you know, said how much she enjoyed the panel and learning more about her business and everything like that, and she was wondering if she ever did consultation calls. And so that was just [00:06:00] something that our mastermind member, she did. She wasn't sure what she was gonna respond, but it ended up working out.

[00:06:06] And so they got on a call together and she said it went really, really well. She got so much value out of the call. And how cool is that? How cool is that? That just one act of bravery, you know, something that was maybe uncomfortable and out of her comfort zone to do, but just taking those few seconds of courage to just ask, Right? To make that connection, to ask. And I will tell you, so many of the opportunities that I have had within my business have been exactly that.

[00:06:34] It's been okay, this is really scary for me to do, this is outside of my comfort zone, but I'm just gonna make an ask. And people might say, No, and I might get rejected and I might get door slammed in my face. Or usually these days it's just someone doesn't reply to your email, right? It's not even that dramatic, but taking the step of courage to just ask.

[00:06:55] And so I wanna encourage you today that there [00:07:00] are opportunities everywhere for you to connect with new people, for you to get outside of your comfort zone, for you to create opportunities for yourself and for your business. And it just takes that courage to just step out and take advantage of the opportunities that are already there for you.

[00:07:17] So let's talk about different opportunities that you have as a business owner to grow your business. One of the most underutilized strategies, in my opinion, just guess what I'm going to say? Yes. If you've been listening to this podcast for a while now, you are right. It is collaboration.

[00:07:36] It's something we've been talking about a lot on the podcast lately, and for a really good reason. There are so many incredible benefits of collaborating with aligned businesses and business owners, and we actually did an entire episode on this, but I want to quickly go through the benefits just so we are on the same page.

[00:07:54] So number one is exposure and cross promotion. You can get massive exposure from [00:08:00] getting in front of other people's audiences and collaborating in that way.

[00:08:05] Number two is building trust with your community. So when they see you working with other like-minded business owners that they already trust, it builds a mutual trust and it builds it really fast.

[00:08:15] Number three is shared ideas and shared skills. This one is so key and often overlooked, but if you've ever been a part of a mastermind, you will understand the power of this. When two or more minds come together, there is a third mind, called Mastermind, that is created. And when you come together and you start brainstorming and thinking of new ideas, There's just incredible creative ideas that come from that that you would never be able to come up with on your own. So collaborative, shared ideas and shared skills is so incredibly powerful when it comes to collaborations.

[00:08:52] Number four is networking opportunities. When you collaborate with other business owners, the networking opportunities are endless. When you start connecting and [00:09:00] collaborating, you'll start to expand your network exponentially and people will start recognizing you for being an expert in your specific industry, or you will be known for your product or service that you offer.

[00:09:14] Number five is referrals. So when you collaborate with other business owners, it's incredible how referrals just come so naturally because again, you're expanding your network and the more people that know about you and your business, the better opportunity there is for people to refer you.

[00:09:32] And then number six is saving money. It's so cool how, when you collaborate with someone else, If you are say, for example, going to host an event with someone and it was going to cost you X amount of money, or maybe you were going to do a photo shoot or whatever you're gonna do to invest in your business.

[00:09:50] If you collaborate with another business owner, you are then able to share that cost of hosting the event, doing the photo shoot, whatever that might be. [00:10:00] And so that is a huge way where you can actually save money by collaborating with someone else. So I truly believe that collaboration, a collaboration strategy, can work for any business.

[00:10:11] No matter what industry you're in, no matter what you do, what you sell, what your product or service is, collaborations can be so incredibly powerful for the growth and exposure of your business. And I don't believe that there's a one size fits all where every single business should do this one collaboration strategy To be successful. I think every business has to, has to have a specific collaboration strategy that is geared towards their specific industry in order for it to be successful.
