121 | 10 Things Successful Business Owners Have in Common
[00:00:00] Danielle: Hello and welcome back to the podcast. Today we have a really fun topic. We are gonna be going over 10 things that successful business owners all have in common. And I'm really excited to be able to share these 10 things with you because I have gotten the pleasure, the opportunity, the honor to interview hundreds, um, I should probably count it, potentially thousands at this point of entrepreneurs who have built really successful businesses.
[00:00:33] And I, through that experience, I see a lot of common threads with a lot of these entrepreneurs. And of course, having a podcast, I also get to interview them on my podcast from the beginning of start of our community, we would interview people at our live events, and so it's really cool to be able to bring that and really filter down like what are the things that [00:01:00] these women have in common that these entrepreneurs possess that allow them to be successful?
[00:01:07] And the thing that I love about these things, and as we talk through them, you'll see, they are all things that you can develop within yourself. So if you are feeling like for whatever reason, you are disqualified from being a successful business owner, I wanna challenge you on that thought because I want you to see, within these 10 things that these are things that you can actually cultivate. It's not really things that people are born with, it's more things that people have put into practice.
[00:01:37] So get your notebook out. Let's go ahead and dive into these 10 things.
[00:01:42] Welcome to the Business Babes Collective Podcast. I'm your host, Danielle Wiebe. This podcast, you'll learn tangible business tips and strategies on how to grow successfully and sustainably. We'll also interview seasoned entrepreneurs so you can listen in on their stories and see behind the [00:02:00] scenes of what it took to grow and scale their businesses. Let's dive in as we discuss the wild, exciting, crazy challenging, rollercoaster ride of entrepreneurship.
[00:02:12] All right. 10 things that successful business owners have in common. Let's start with number one. They dream big and they surround themselves with other people that are also big dreamers. Have you noticed that successful people are always connected with other successful people?
[00:02:29] It's like there's this private club of successful entrepreneurs that are always hanging out with each other. I totally felt like that when I first got started in the business space, and as I started realizing like this is not a coincidence. People that have big dreams and have big goals and visions for their lives and for their businesses, love to surround themselves with other people who dream just as big and potentially push them outside of their comfort zone to dream even bigger [00:03:00] than they were before.
[00:03:01] And that is one of the reasons why I absolutely love the concept of Masterminds. I know I've talked about the, the concept of mastermind on the podcast before, but it has been so game changing for me to be a part of another group of entrepreneurs who think and dream big, and I have had the opportunity to be a part of some incredible masterminds with amazing women and men who are doing really cool things, and it is just so, so game changing to be able to surround yourself with those people and just see what other people are doing and just be inspired by them and then also get feedback on your own business from those people.
[00:03:41] It is just absolutely incredible, and that's why we encourage everyone to be a part of a mastermind, whether it be within our community or someone else's community, because it is so important that when you are going for really big things, that you have other people that can actually cheer you on and be [00:04:00] excited for you when you accomplish something and challenge you when maybe you're having those hard days, right? So that is number one, is people that are successful dream big and surround themselves with other people who big, dream big as well.
[00:04:14] Number two is that successful people are humble. And they're always learning. They never assume that they know everything. They're always open to new ideas and new ways of looking at things.
[00:04:27] Number three is clarity. They have clarity on their vision and values. This one is really important. They know where they're going, but they also have really strong values in what they stand by. This is one of the things that I think gets really overlooked in building your business and it's something that you kind of push off into maybe the future and you're like, oh yeah, my values, I'll think about my values later. I encourage you really be clear on what are your values [00:05:00] as a brand, as a company, as a person.
[00:05:02] Where are those boundaries? What are things that you will not do? What are things that you stand for as a brand? Um, and you know, your values potentially could be controversial and they could, and they could cause people to be attracted to you and then other people that are maybe not aligned to be repelled by you. And that's okay. That's actually really, really good. And so if you stand firm with your values, what you believe in and the things that you hold dear to your heart, you will start to attract those right customers and clients to your.
[00:05:38] Okay. Number four is successful entrepreneurs are willing to fail and embarrass themselves. I cannot tell you how many times I have experienced failure, and I've seen other people, other really, really successful entrepreneurs experience some really big failures. And some of those failures are public failures, right? And then [00:06:00] some of those failures are more private.
[00:06:02] But that's why I love chatting with entrepreneurs on this podcast cuz we can really dive into what were some of those hardest things that you had to go through as a business owner? What were maybe some embarrassing things that you experienced as you were growing your and building your business? You know, I think it's so important to talk about these things because it really just makes it normal.
[00:06:22] Because it is normal. It's super, super normal. As you grow and as you expand, you're probably gonna. Bigger and bigger mistakes, and that's okay because you're gonna learn from every failure and it's going to make you better in the long run. Okay, number five is that they invest in themselves and their businesses.
[00:06:42] So successful entrepreneurs invest in both time and money into bettering themselves and into scaling their business. So they know that they are always needing to learn new things, and if they can speed up that process [00:07:00] by investing in education or coaching, or maybe a new software update or maybe attending an event or a conference, whatever that might be, they're willing to do it because they know it's gonna help them reach that next level, and it's gonna help them reach that next level faster.
[00:07:18] And so entrepreneurs that are have a success mindset, they're not afraid to make investments in their business because they know it's an investment, right? It's not just like throwing money out the window. It's like that time and that money that they're spending is going to create even more income and more success in the long term, and so they're willing to do that in order to speed up their success.
[00:07:46] Number six is successful entrepreneurs have an abundance mindset. We have talked about abundance mindset on this podcast quite a bit, but it is so, so important when it comes to building your business. [00:08:00] We don't have to think of others in our industry as competition. We can think of them as collaborators. How can we work together to actually help one another succeed?
[00:08:10] And that's really the type of mindset it takes to be successful because if we're always looking at other people that are within our industry as competition, we're actually just holding ourselves back from incredible opportunities that we could have to create more impact to also expand our networks and create more income for ourselves as well.
[00:08:32] I know for me, this has been just so incredible to collaborate with other business owners in my same space and not look at them as competition in that, oh, they're gonna steal my clients, or they're gonna, um, you know, take my community. But it's more like, how can we. All rise together and support one another as we grow and creating those mutually beneficial partnerships are [00:09:00] so, so key.
[00:09:00] So that obviously leads very well into the next one, which is number seven, which is collaborating with other entrepreneurs. So successful business people are always looking for ways to network and work with other entrepreneurs and to support one another. And they understand the fact that they cannot succeed by trying to do it all themselves.
[00:09:23] And you know, this is something that I am just so, so passionate about, and I will not stop talking about it because I think if more people really understood the power of this, they wouldn't struggle so hard to, to grow their businesses because they would know like, Hey, how can I collaborate with other entrepreneurs?
[00:09:44] How can I collaborate with other people who have my ideal clients within their networks? How can we create these win-win scenarios like I talked about, where we can support one another, promote one another. And you know, there's a whole strategy around [00:10:00] that, and I know we've talked about this on the podcast. We did a whole series on collaborations, but just being open to that, I think is so, so key and really important when it comes to having success.
[00:10:12] Okay, number eight. Is creating a community around their brand. So successful entrepreneurs recognize that building a brand is not just about their products and services, but it's also about building a community and making their customers and clients feel like they're a part of something bigger.
[00:10:33] I think this is so key. I know some incredible brands who do this so well and it creates so much loyalty to the brand. Think about the brands that you absolutely love, like just take a moment to think about those brands or those businesses that you really just feel like you're a part of this community.
[00:10:53] Even if you just, you know, follow them from afar, but you feel like. A part of it in some ways, [00:11:00] and that is really a true sign of someone building a really incredible community around their brand. Number nine is that they embrace change. So they know that as time goes on, things are gonna change, industries will change, and they will likely need to adapt and learn new things, learn new skills, and actually evolve their business.
[00:11:24] This has never been so relevant. I mean, think about the last few years, how many of us as business owners have had to evolve and change our businesses due to the climate of what, what we were dealing with right? Throughout Covid, so many businesses really had to figure out, how are you gonna do things differently?
[00:11:45] How are you gonna pivot? We had to do a incredibly massive pivot and change our entire model. And so it's really important to recognize that things are always changing and that's okay. It's actually good, a good thing. And if we can [00:12:00] embrace that change and be excited about it and be flexible to actually work with the changes, we can see success no matter what the, uh, impacts of the economy or the impacts of our industries changing or new social platforms popping up, whatever that might be, we can be solid in our business abilities and be able to pivot with it.
[00:12:25] Number 10 is that successful entrepreneurs take scary action so they take action and they also make decisions quickly. They don't wait for things to happen to them, but they go out and actually make them happen.
[00:12:42] And I wanted to speak on this one for a minute because this is something that I have had to develop within myself is not only taking scary action, but making decisions quickly and not second guessing myself, when I first started as a business owner and [00:13:00] entrepreneur, I would second guess myself all the time.
[00:13:04] Every single decision that I made, every single email that I sent out. I would just second guess, second guess, and I realized like that was holding me back from actually building my business and i, again, there's still so much growth in, in this area that I feel like I can do as as an entrepreneur.
[00:13:23] However, I do feel like I have gotten so much better at making decisions quickly. Either saying yes or no to opportunities and just going forward for it and taking action, taking scary action, taking messy action, you know, sending out emails. Yes, I check my emails, but you know what, you guys, I'm sure you've probably noticed if you're subscribed to our email, grammar is not my strong suit.
[00:13:50] Like it really is not. And writing too, which is why I love podcasting, because I love talking. I love communicating with you. I love being in [00:14:00] your earbuds. But when it comes to actually writing, I really struggle with it. But I've had to get over that and realize, okay, I'm gonna do the best that I can do.
[00:14:09] I'll check it over, but it's not always gonna be perfect, right? And so if you find that perfection is holding you back, I want you to remember that successful entrepreneurs take scary action. They make decisions quickly, and they don't second guess themselves over and over and over again. So take that scary action today.
[00:14:28] I encourage you to do that, okay? I have a bonus one for you because you know, you guys know I love the bonus. The bonus tips, the bonus things, all of the, all of the bonus things. So the bonus is that entrepreneurs all have grit and perseverance. They don't quit when things get hard. Ah, you guys, seriously, this one is I think, the most important one, which is that why I wanted to add it in here.
[00:14:56] But I wanted to have 10 steps and not 11, cuz you know, still perfectionist over [00:15:00] here. Anyways, this one is so important, and I think this is actually one that I have really had since the beginning, even though I have really had some big, big challenges, big struggles in growing and scaling my business. And I've had moments where it felt really hard and I may be wanted to or felt like it was tempting to throw in the towel or give up or, you know, um, do something different.
[00:15:32] I stuck with it. I stuck with this vision that I had when I first started my business, and I realized like, okay, I, I have to have that grit. I have to have that perseverance to keep going when things get hard, because things will get hard, right? As entrepreneurs, if you have not experienced it yet, I don't wanna burst your bubble, but you will go through challenging times and I think it's [00:16:00] really important to talk about that because I think entrepreneurship gets glamorized, right?
[00:16:07] We see it all the time of, you know, these glamorized versions of what it means to be an entrepreneur. And of course, on social media, we're only seeing a very, very small snippet of what everyone's life looks. like my life for example, it probably looks a lot better on social media than it really is in in real life, right?
[00:16:25] Like I'm not talking about my hard days, I'm not talking about the struggles that I'm having every single day. I share a little bit more about that on the podcast, but it is just so important to realize that everyone is going through hard things. And so knowing first of all that you're not. And then also knowing that it's okay to have those challenges and what's gonna make you a more successful business owner is that grit and that perseverance to keep going.
[00:16:55] So I hope this episode was insightful, uh, [00:17:00] inspiring, and I hope it opened your eyes to some of the things that. I have seen in common with the successful business owners that I have gotten the opportunity to interview people that are a part of our mastermind and other people that I've gotten the opportunity to learn from.
[00:17:18] So what I want your homework to be today, your tangible takeaway is to think about this list. What are some of the qualities that you already possess? What are some that you want to work?
