Have you ever heard the saying, “You are who you surround yourself with”? Yes, this applies to your choice in friendships, but it also heavily applies growing your business and building a strong team around you – your DREAM TEAM, if you will.

Over the past five years, the Business Babes Collective brand has grown tremendously and I’ve had the pleasure of expanding our team. I’ve also spoken to many women in our community whom are in the process of building their teams. At our ‘Love Your Business’ gathering, we dove into this topic further.

From my both my own experience and from conversations with our community, we’ve come up with

8 Tips on Cultivating Your Dream Team:

1.     Know Your Values

Get super clear on your company’s core values and the purpose behind why you do what you do, that way when bringing on a new hire on, you can find someone that aligns with your values and is on a similar mission.

2.     Hire People Different from You

Recognize your strengths and weaknesses and hire people who make up for where you may lack. Honesty hour… We all have different strengths. Look for people who complement each other’s strengths and weaknesses.

3.     Character Over Skills

Hire based on character, attitude, work ethic and values, over skillset. Why? Well because most skills can be taught, but you can’t teach passion and heart.

4.     Get Social

Check out their social media platforms. Yes, do a little insta stalking. You can tell a lot about someone by what they are posting on social media- their interests, personality, and values.

5.     Stay Connected

The only way to build a healthy work culture is to stay in consistent communication. Host calls with your business partners and team members regularly. If you live close by, do in-person meetings. If you are remote, do team calls via video conference (PS: check out Zoom we love it!).

6.     Keep Open Communication

Give and ask for feedback. Don’t shy away from hard conversations! Be honest and open when issues arise, or mistakes happen. Choose to talk about them. Discuss them openly, learn, and grow.

7.     Create an Attractive Culture

As your business and team grow, try to create an attractive culture. This will help in your recruitment process and will have people begging to work with your business/brand. Create fun experiences with your team and a culture people want to be a part of.

8.    Have Fun

Try to connect on a more personal level. Ask them about their family, hobbies, goals, and encourage them not only in their work, but also in their personal life. Creating an environment where your team members feel valued and cared about, is everything
