[00:02:48] Danielle: Welcome back to the podcast actually, 'cause this is your second time. If people don't know you, can you give us a little insight into who you are and a little bit more about your. Businesses

[00:02:59] Alisha: [00:03:00] for sure. I'm Alisha. I am the founder of the social project. So we are a marketing agency focused on the hospitality industry, along with CPG brands.

[00:03:09] Alisha: So we help them elevate their online marketing through strategy, full management content, along with activation events. And then I am also the chapter leader now of. San Diego business babes formerly was a chapter leader of Seattle, made a bit of a shift into warmer weather. So I yeah, host events and workshops just like they do in Vancouver and a podcast host of a podcast coming out in February called here for a good time.

[00:03:41] Danielle: Love it. Love it. Love it. Well, yeah, for people who are kind of new to our community, Alicia has been a part of our community, honestly, almost since the beginning, it has been several years of our business relationship, friendship blossoming. So there's been lots of. Lots of great times, lots of hilarious [00:04:00] times that Alicia and I have had together.

[00:04:03] Danielle: I think the cool thing that I love about our relationship is we are able to share in like the wins, but also share, wow, this really didn't go well. And I think like that's the benefit of being in community and having business relationships that are. Transparent and you know where we can come together and be like, Hey, I'm working on this or I'm struggling with this.

[00:04:26] Danielle: Oh, and so I think that is really cool that we have that type of relationship and yeah, Alicia is just a really cool person. And so if you don't know her yet, you got to get to know her. I wanted to ask you, Alicia, because you've gone through a lot of just. Business evolutions, I feel like since the beginning of your journey.

[00:04:44] Danielle: So can you kind of take us back and share, like, what was that first sort of moment, like where you realized you wanted to be your own business owner and then what has that journey been like from that first kind of idea to where [00:05:00] you're at today?

[00:05:01] Alisha: Yeah. So I was actually studying for my GMAT to go, you know, through an MBA program somewhere.

[00:05:08] Alisha: And during that time I was with somebody who was also an entrepreneur and owned a few gyms and whatnot. So I was around it, didn't really know much about it because that just wasn't what success looked like in my household, at least it wasn't an option. And so it never occurred to me that this is something I could have done.

[00:05:26] Alisha: I had then gone to an event, which I then walked out of and I was like, Oh, this makes sense. I don't want to work for anybody but myself. And so back in 2017 was kind of when the wheels started turning of, okay, what am I really good at? I had been in a marketing role for about, I think it was eight years back then.

[00:05:41] Alisha: And It was something that I really loved. It's where my creativity came out. And so my partner, then he was like, okay, well, you're really great at this. You handle all my social, like, why isn't this something you kind of explore? And so that's where it started to, I guess, snowball into what it is today. It definitely did not look [00:06:00] like what it does today.

[00:06:01] Alisha: I remember going into entrepreneurship and even coming to my first fan city business business event. I actually thought I wanted to be a blogger back then. It'd be the worst blogger ever. Cause I never post for myself. And so yeah, that transitioned very quickly into a social media agency. But I even remember just.

[00:06:18] Alisha: Creating my logo back then. I remember thinking at the time, okay, what is everybody else doing? Because I'm going to have to fit in. And so not really stepping into it as myself and how I have this, I would say like past year and a half and just seeing that transition as well. I

[00:06:36] Danielle: love that. I love that so much because I think it is so relatable to anyone who's been an entrepreneur for like a few years.

[00:06:46] Danielle: It really is like when you first get started, you have all these ideas of what you want to do and you're excited and you have all these like dreams and ambitions. And then it just like really transitions and changes along the way as you start to figure out, okay, what do I actually really [00:07:00] like? What do I actually really want to achieve?

[00:07:02] Danielle: And like you said, like your branding has evolved over time to really fit. You and your personality and the personality of your brand, whereas it started of like, I'm going to look at what everyone else is doing and try to like fit in, which is so relevant. Like, I think we all do that when we're first getting started.

[00:07:20] Danielle: Like, what do we automatically do when we think of launching a business? It's like, well, who else is doing this? And what, what are they charging? What are they, what do they look like? Oh, I guess I have to be exactly like that in order to have success. And so I would love to hear like, what has that transition been like?

[00:07:37] Danielle: Obviously I know you and I know how important for you personal development is and all of that, but what has that been like for you? Cause I feel like a lot of the confidence that you have today has been something that has like evolved over time. And you know, people maybe look at you now and they're like, wow, she's like accomplished all this stuff and this is what she's doing.

[00:07:56] Danielle: But how did you get to that? How have you gotten to that [00:08:00] point?

[00:08:00] Alisha: A lot of self awareness work that I had to do and realize, okay, why was I trying to fit in so hard? And what did success look like to me? I think that's one thing to always come back to you is what does success look like to me and what am I passionate about?

[00:08:15] Alisha: How can I put those two things together? Because what success looks like to me might not look the same to somebody else and vice versa. And so it was a lot of a checking my ego at the time. And I do constantly because at some point we all get into, you know, our heads and we get tunnel vision and everything we're doing is right.

[00:08:34] Alisha: And so it was really checking my ego along with. Really creating that self awareness of, okay, what did I want to accomplish? And what did I want that to look like for myself? So that was a lot of, you know, stepping away from working with other service based business owners, because that didn't excite me.

[00:08:48] Alisha: My, I guess, career in marketing started in the beverage industry, along with hosting events and being really involved in all of that. So coming, stepping away from the service based [00:09:00] businesses and, you know, being in that and really... Coming into, I always say I came home when I, you know, stepped into the hospitality.

[00:09:09] Alisha: Space along with C. P. G. Brands is it just felt like I came home when I came into this brand that has evolved into what it is today and it was more so me and I really enjoyed coming to work every day. So making sure that what I was doing wasn't draining me.

[00:09:28] Danielle: Yeah, yeah, because I think we can get stuck in what we've always done or, oh, this is how I have seen success.

[00:09:38] Danielle: So this is how I have to do it. And this is what, and we almost feel like we, I can relate to this because I feel like so many times in my own journey too. It's been like, oh, this is the way I've always done it. And so when we go to like pivot and make a change, it's so hard because we have to kind of rethink everything and restructure [00:10:00] everything, which is like harder than it sounds.

[00:10:03] Danielle: Oh, it's scary too.

[00:10:04] Alisha: Yeah. Because we have to address all these fears of whether it's imposter syndrome and stuff like that. And so what are the fears that are coming up for you? And then. I would always say to my team, at least write down the fear. And then on the other side of the page, write down what the truth is, you know, and we can do that in any aspect of our life, whether it's relationships or business or, you know, our health and everything else.

[00:10:24] Alisha: And so, yeah, just addressing all of those two and figuring out what the truth is.

[00:10:29] Danielle: Yeah, so, so good. So I would love to hear when it comes to building your business, obviously you have really kind of dove into building community because, you know, you're running your brand, your own digital marketing agency, plus hosting these events with San Diego business phase and gonna, you're podcast.

[00:10:53] Danielle: So obviously a lot of those things require relationships, require community, like So Where has that sense [00:11:00] of feeling like you need that, like, where has that come from? Probably from when

[00:11:04] Alisha: I was just younger, being part of like, things like Girl Guides and like, really having a community of... I was in Girl Guides for a really long time, by the way, like, since I was five, up until I was like, I think...

[00:11:15] Alisha: 14, 15,

[00:11:17] Danielle: I do not know about you, Alicia. That is super fun.

[00:11:21] Alisha: Those cookies. I went hard on selling those

[00:11:24] Danielle: cookies. That's where your entrepreneurial spirit was born. Right.

[00:11:30] Alisha: Or even just like being part of the rugby team and also coaching afterwards, just being around. You know, supportive women has kind of always been throughout my entire lifetime, I guess.

[00:11:44] Alisha: And so what does that look like now that I'm in a different space? Because I didn't really get that when I was in. The corporate space, it was typically only me in those spaces. And so I knew when I went into the entrepreneurial space, I [00:12:00] knew I needed something like that. I just didn't know what it looked like until I, you know, was opened up to the business space community and along with other communities online and wherever else I go.

[00:12:10] Alisha: So yeah, it's been definitely a defining moment because Nobody really gets it like the people who are in it as well. Totally.

[00:12:18] Danielle: And I think often as business owners, we are because especially before we end up hiring a team or having other people that we work with. We are so in our own world. And I think it can get so lonely is one thing, but then also we get so in our heads and kind of like we were talking about at the beginning, like we have all these fears and these doubts and these insecurities and all these things that come up for us.

[00:12:45] Danielle: And if we don't have that community, To really fall back on or even just like call us out to be like, Hey, like, why are you feeling or why are you, you know, thinking these things about yourself or why are you keep telling yourself these lies and [00:13:00] these things that aren't true. If we don't have those other people to kind of reflect back to us.

[00:13:04] Danielle: And like you said, self awareness is huge. And how are we supposed to have that when we are so alone? Because really, then we get into this spiral of just overthinking. I don't know if anyone else can relate to the overthinking spiral. Like you can spend an entire day just like overthinking one email. And it's like, you can't run a successful business that way.

[00:13:28] Danielle: Like if you're going to be literally overthinking, what is this person going to think about me? What if I, What if I say this and they think this are like, we're not going to be able to build a sustainable business. Right. So we need to like, think quickly as entrepreneurs. And I feel like that comes with, like you said, self awareness and tell us about the importance of also investing in yourself.

[00:13:48] Danielle: Can I, cause I know you're really passionate about that too.

[00:13:51] Alisha: Yeah. So I have invested in myself, at least my business ever since the idea came into place. So I started working with a business coach even [00:14:00] before I fully launched the social project. And so I worked with her just to lay the foundation of the business.

[00:14:07] Alisha: I made sure that the foundation was super stable going into it because I didn't know anything about running a business. I mean, a lot of us don't, I didn't, you know, go to business school. I'm actually a political science major. So if you want to talk politics, guess slide into my DMS, I'm all about it, but I didn't know what that looked like.

[00:14:24] Alisha: And so I need knew I needed help and it was okay for me to reach out to help. That's one thing I've never been afraid of is being like, Hey, I don't know how to do this. Who can I reach out to, to help me and knowing that that's okay. And it's once again, checking our ego to make sure that we know. We don't know everything and we don't have to know everything.

[00:14:43] Alisha: And so working with a business coach then along with throughout the last five years, it has just looked like working with different business coaches for different things and also leaning on the community as well. So going to workshops or even hosting the workshops ourselves. And there's so [00:15:00] many things you can learn through that too, because even though I have a service based business, I go to these workshops or events and I learn so much from somebody who has an e commerce business as well, because I get to see it from their perspective and be like, Oh, you're probably like one of my consumers of whether it's our group program or services, what can I learn from you in terms of, you know, what you're looking for and how you run your business?

[00:15:22] Alisha: And so just being really open to people. Investing in yourself and but make sure that you find somebody who gets your business and, you know, is going to

[00:15:31] Danielle: support you through it. Yeah, I love that. Making smart investments and I think like no matter what, when it comes to growing our businesses, like you said, there's going to be so much learning like I know for me.

[00:15:46] Danielle: I think about when I first started and I think about just how much I didn't know, right? Like, it's really overwhelming when you're getting started with a business. I think even like the community when we started hosting [00:16:00] events, I just had no idea what to expect with hosting my first event. And then when I wanted to like hire my first person, it's like, Oh my goodness, there's just so many things that you don't know.

[00:16:10] Danielle: And I think that's so key what you said of like, it's okay to not know. How, how would we know if we haven't done it before? How are we, like, how would we know how to do something? And so it's like taking the shame off of it and being like, no, I need help. I need support. And the more like, one of the things that I really want to focus on this year is asking for support and knowing that even when you're in, like, for example, You hire a coach or you're in a group program or whatever you're in.

[00:16:42] Danielle: There's all these things that are available to you, but like, how many times do you also shrink back and like, don't even take advantage of like, Oh, I have this question. Oh, I just, I don't want to bother. I don't want to bother them. I don't, you know, whatever it's like. You're paying for this. You're paying for this community.

[00:16:57] Danielle: You're paying for this coach that you have at your [00:17:00] fingertips. Like, why are you not taking advantage of it and really going all in? And that's something that I've realized that I have done in the past. And I know, and you've probably seen too. And, and I don't know, I would love to hear your perspective on this if you've been like that.

[00:17:13] Danielle: But I feel like over the past year, I've just gotten like, if I'm going to invest in something, like I'm going to really invest. Not just my money, but my time, my energy. I'm going to get the most out of it that I can because, you know, that's why I came into this, this program in the first place. So I would love to hear your perspective on that.

[00:17:31] Danielle: Like, has, has that been something that you've struggled with too, with like almost shrinking back?

[00:17:36] Alisha: Yes, I could not agree with you anymore, because I think so many times we are like, Oh, I'm going to hire this coach or go to this event or workshop. And it's going to be like the secret sauce to my business succeeding.

[00:17:48] Alisha: But we forget that we're the ones that have to really put in the work. Yes. The business coach can give us like whatever tools that they have, but the discipline that we instill in ourselves and the, or what we do in [00:18:00] our day to day for our business is what's really going to move it forward. It's just that extra support.

[00:18:04] Alisha: And so same thing goes with events, right? We, I think I, at least myself, when I first went to a few events, I remember, and this wasn't even business based being like, Oh, I didn't really learn anything. But then I ended up making so many connections at these events that I was like, okay, here's where the ROI was.

[00:18:21] Alisha: It was. And so learning that just because you go into these certain things, the ROI will look different almost every single time. Whether that's something you learned about your business or yourself or a connection that you made or 10 connections that you made who might have not been Ideal clients for your specific business.

[00:18:38] Alisha: You never know what that could lead to down the road. And so being really open, but also being super, super disciplined.

[00:18:46] Danielle: Oh my gosh. Okay. Discipline. I feel like we could have a whole episode of them as an entrepreneur of like discipline and like focus. I actually just. We talked about this on a previous episode about how, how focus.

[00:18:58] Danielle: And [00:19:00] I feel like this year for me, my word is, well, I have, I have another, I have a few words. Okay. I have a few words. Don't hate me.

[00:19:11] Danielle: Um, so one of my words is energy. Cause I want to have lots of energy. I'm pregnant and podcast knows this, but yeah. So having energy for like the people in my life. Obviously family. And then also for my business. And I think for me, it's like, okay, how do I generate that energy? Because there's going to be some days where I don't feel energetic, but it's like, how do I actually like create that energy out of sometimes out of nothing.

[00:19:36] Danielle: And then my other word is focus, because I think And this can relate, I think, to any entrepreneur. We don't necessarily need more time. I feel like I learned this when I had Rosie, we don't necessarily need more time. We need more focus. Like what are we actually focused on? What are the tasks that we're doing that actually make a difference?

[00:19:58] Danielle: Because there's a big difference between [00:20:00] being busy all day. And actually being productive on the things that matter. And I've been so guilty of being like, Oh, I worked like so hard and blah, blah, blah. And then you're like, but what did I actually accomplish? Let's be real here. Right.

[00:20:14] Alisha: So relatable. Yeah.

[00:20:17] Danielle: Everyone that works from home is like, yeah, it was like randomly doing laundry and reorganizing my drawers. Like what was going on, but yeah, no, but getting back to the discipline. I love that you mentioned that Alicia, because. What you said, I, I want to pause on that for a minute. Like, for example, going to an event or being a part of something, what intention are you bringing to that experience?

[00:20:40] Danielle: Like, what is your intention of what you want to get out of it? Do you want to learn strategy or? tactics of like how to grow your business? Or do you want to actually make connections that are gonna maybe help you in some other way? Or is your intention to just your mindset to [00:21:00] like up level your mindset?

[00:21:00] Danielle: Like what is your intention? Because probably any event that you attend or any kind of business, Whether it be an event, a mastermind, a workshop, or a program, or anything, you're going to get out of it what you put into it, or what your intention is to get out of it. So, like you said, it's like you doing the work too.

[00:21:21] Danielle: Like, just because you pay for something doesn't mean it's automatically going to make a difference for you. So I think that's a big Thing too.

[00:21:29] Alisha: Yeah. And it's, we're so busy with this like instant gratification thing, cause we get it online all the time that I think that's almost kind of transpired in this coaching or group program or event space as well, or whatever we put our money into.

[00:21:42] Alisha: And so, yeah, really stepping away from that and really realizing that it's you that has to put in the work and that's what entrepreneurship is, right. Where we only get to where we're going because we put in the work.

[00:21:53] Danielle: Yeah, totally, totally. Oh my goodness. I love that. Okay. I want you to share some things that [00:22:00] are coming up for you because I'm really excited of all the things that you're doing.

[00:22:04] Danielle: So first of all, it comes to your own business. What are some things that the community can look forward to? What are some things that you're working on that people can get involved in?

[00:22:15] Alisha: Yeah. So we have our group program coming up in May. So that's going to be a year long. You get to hang out with us. And our team, along with two retreats, which I'm so excited about.

[00:22:25] Alisha: Um, right. And so we're really going to be focusing on your marketing as a whole throughout the entire program. And each month, you're going to have a one to one with myself, along with my CMO, Nikki, who is a gem, like It used to be the market or head of marketing for Tesla. She's got some gold in her or a lot of it.

[00:22:45] Alisha: And so one on ones with us each month, along with a guest speaker. So guest speakers are going to hit on everything from your SEO to PR to hiring along with every other month, because this is so important. And if you don't have your finances right in your business, please do [00:23:00] it. But every other month you will have a, um, accountant slash bookkeeper coming in to do a health check on your finances, which is major.

[00:23:08] Alisha: And I haven't seen it done in a lot of group programs, so we're bringing the heat with that, but. We have that going on along with founders dinners, um, in San Diego, along with possibly Vancouver. We'll see how the weather holds up there. Um,

[00:23:24] Danielle: Founders everywhere. It's just chasing the weather wherever it goes around the world,

[00:23:31] Alisha: but it's always so extreme.

[00:23:32] Alisha: So. Yeah. Yeah. Just gathering a bunch of people in the food and beverage space, especially to connect because they're always so busy in their own businesses, whether it's wineries or restaurants that they don't really get time to meet other people in the industry. So stuff around that, we have a free quiz as well.

[00:23:51] Alisha: So you can figure out where to focus on your business as well. Cause we, there's so much info online. Do this and do that and go [00:24:00] to, you know, square 10, but you really missed one through nine. So,

[00:24:04] Danielle: right. Yeah. Okay. Awesome. And we're going to link that below. So if people want to get access to the quiz and find out what they need to focus on, we'll link that below too.

[00:24:12] Danielle: I always love, I'm like obsessed with quizzes. I'm like, we need to make it. For business space. I just always love, I'm like, I need to know like what is the J 14

[00:24:21] Alisha: magazine? Like, yes, meals than us because those magazines used to have so many quizzes.

[00:24:27] Danielle: Yeah, I know. So it's like, yeah, we need to, we need that fix in our life.

[00:24:33] Danielle: I love that. And then as far as San Diego goes, there's an event in person event coming up real quick here. So if you're listening to this live, when it comes out, then definitely check it out. Cause I'm pretty sure it's like almost sold out. It's like 80 percent sold out or something. Yes, we are 80

[00:24:49] Alisha: percent sold out.

[00:24:50] Alisha: Um, even before this year came kind of. Two heads. So that is a goal setting and vision board workshop. It is a good old pajama party, which I'm so excited [00:25:00] about. And I always try and take events to like the next level because I just don't want to be, we're not another networking group. I think that's one thing I love about business babes as a whole, regardless of what chapter you look at.

[00:25:11] Alisha: We're just, we're yeah, just not another networking group. And so. We're a whole community that cares about the growth of your business and the impact that you're making. So yeah, we have that coming up on June 27th from six to nine at Femex. So if you're in, you said

[00:25:25] Danielle: June 26th, 27th, but January, January,

[00:25:28] Alisha: I'm living in right now guys.

[00:25:31] Alisha: So yes, January 27th, six to nine at Femex. So if you're in the SoCal area, I know a lot of you come even down from places like Oceanside or wherever else, please come by and hang with us.

[00:25:45] Danielle: Or if you're from anywhere else, especially in Canada, if you're like, I need to get away and just fly to San Diego for a weekend, then definitely check it out because yeah, the events in San Diego are so, so fun, [00:26:00] so much fun.

[00:26:00] Danielle: And plus, hello, you get to spend time, time in San Diego. So it's amazing. It's one of my favorite places. I love that. Lastly, I want to announce that Alicia is one of our. Speakers for our business breakthrough conference, which is so, so exciting. So you guys know all about that from our past episodes, but basically we're bringing together super Epic speakers from like around the world.

[00:26:25] Danielle: And of course had to have Alicia on for that as well. So if you want to hear more from Alicia and more about her business breakthroughs and all of that good stuff, then definitely come join us on January 30th. So yeah, all of the links for everything. Is all going to be in the show notes. So if you're like, Whoa, that's a lot.

[00:26:42] Danielle: Um, we will have all the information for you there, but before we end off, Alicia, this was so much fun. I just love our chats always so fun. Can you tell us what. Are you most proud of, of your entrepreneurial journey so far?

[00:26:57] Alisha: It has to be taking risks [00:27:00] every single day, whether that's, you know, even just starting the business or on my team and really trusting them.

[00:27:05] Alisha: I think that's the name of the game when it comes to entrepreneurship is taking risks and two things are going to happen. You're either going to win or you're going to learn. That's it. And so what's, what's the worst. So,

[00:27:18] Danielle: so good. I love that answer. So good. Taking risks and just going for it. Like why not, right?

[00:27:24] Danielle: You're going to come to the end of your life and you're going to wonder, why did I not take that risk? So just take the

[00:27:29] Alisha: risk and join us on January 30th at the conference and have the best time.

[00:27:35] Danielle: Have the best time ever. It's going to be so fun, but yeah. So thank you so much for joining us, Alicia. It's been such a joy to have you on.

[00:27:43] Danielle: And I am so excited also for your podcast launching. It's going to be super fun. It'll be Sue. I feel like there's going to be just like so much of Alicia's personality that you're going to get to know that maybe the business side doesn't get to see. [00:28:00]

[00:28:00] Alisha: So I can't wait to get the heat. Thanks so much, Danielle.
